Sawdust Editorial Philosophy
The purpose of Sawdust
is to inform members of the SFA Alumni Association on the state of the
University, the Association, one another, and to foster alumni pride
and involvement in the University and Association.
The University
– In addition to reporting on the present University, it should look
back to foster alumni nostalgia and to teach University history, and
look forward to its possible futures. It should report on new events,
programs, and discoveries in research, so alumni can continue the
education they began at SFA and so alumni can know how their donations
and tax dollars are being spent. It should be a forum for students,
faculty members, administrators, and alumni to debate University
issues, through articles and via published letters to the editor. It
should alert members to upcoming events on campus as well as events in
their respective geographic areas when possible.
The Association
– As the SFA Alumni Association’s magazine, it should report news of
the Association and alert members to upcoming Association events
through editorial notices and in-house advertising.
One Another
– As part of the Association’s overall mission, the magazine should
feature alumni in articles and should provide alumni space to share
personal news.
As the main publication of the SFA Alumni Association, Sawdust
is the most tangible benefit of membership. It has been a unifying
force in the Association; it has acted as the Association’s voice; and
it has been the main news link between the University and alumni.
It
should be assembled with respect to the basics of good journalism:
prominent issues on campus and within the Association should be
addressed; obvious questions should be answered; facts should follow
logically. The political or religious biases of the staff should never
be evident; neither should language nor logic ever be twisted for some
desired result. The magazine should use and defend proper, plain
English and resist jargon and verbal inflation.
Its
tone should both reflect and suggest the culture of the Association.
Maintaining high standards of grammar, writing, journalism,
photography, design, printing, and delivery are important because they
suggest the quality of the Association and the University it supports.
The
magazine should exhibit good taste in its editorial and advertising
contents. Advertising should be encouraged, as it will allow for the
magazine’s growth, and because it provides alumni a chance to buy SFA
related merchandise and show school spirit.
The
Association is best served by a magazine of the utmost general
interest; for it to be so, editorial control must lie with the magazine
staff. To maintain continuity and relevance, the editor should control
the content, in consultation with Association’s Associate Vice
President for Alumni Affairs and sparing, ad hoc consultation with
Association officers When the content is not controlled by a single
guiding vision, but by competing factions or by committee, the result
will be disjointed and mediocre at best. Members’ ideas for articles
should be welcomed at all times, but no member should expect to dictate
what the magazine does or does not cover.
The
magazine should be attractive as well as informative, entertaining as
well as intelligent, and reflect school spirit as well as report
honestly on University affairs. |
