Legacy Dinner to honor Abernethy mark on SFA

The traditional Friday night events begin with the Alumni Legacy Dinner and Reception at 6 p.m. at the Hotel Fredonia on Friday, October 18. The dinner will honor Francis "Ab” Abernethy ’49 and the late Hazel Abernethy ’48 & ’72. Reservations are $50 per person, $90 per couple or $350 for a table of eight. Cocktail reception begins at 6:00 p.m. at the hotel lobby and The Vault and the dinner will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the Banita Ballroom. The live auction and Benefit Drawing will begin at 8:00 p.m.

Dr. Francis E. "Ab” Abernethy ’49 is Professor Emeritus of English at SFA and Editor Emeritus of the Texas Folklore Society. The 85-year-old Panhandle and Pineywoods Texan is the curator of exhibits for the East Texas Historical Association and a member of the Texas Institute of Letters. Abernethy holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature and joined the SFA faculty in 1965. For the 32 years, he taught world literature, Shakespeare, folklore and many more subjects to countless SFA students. The walls of Abernethy’s Texas Folklore Society office in the basement of the Rusk Building contain a dizzying array of artifacts and mementos he has collected during a lifetime of adventuring. Still, of SFA, Abernethy says, "There’s no place on earth I would rather be than on this campus.”

Hazel Shelton Abernethy died in Nacogdoches on March 22, 2012. Hazel was born in Nacogdoches on May 20, 1927, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shelton, who had come to Nacogdoches in 1923 as a faculty family for the opening of Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. Coach Bob Shelton was SFA's first coach and athletic director and later was Dean of Men.

She graduated from SFA in 1948, where she was Miss SFA and Carolyn Thompson Hill Award recipient. She received her M.A. from SFA in 1971 and taught in SFA's history department. At one time Hazel was teaching history at SFA, her husband was teaching English, and her son Robert was teaching geology. All of her children attended SFA, and Hazel was a devoted alumna. Hazel married Francis E. "Ab” Abernethy, her high school sweetheart, on June 12, 1948.

At the event there will be a live auction, the announcement of the winner of the $10,000 Benefit Drawing ticket and special recognition of the Class of 1963 reunion attendees. Live auction items include: Dinner with the SFA President, Naming Alumni Drive, SFA Garden Stone, Hand Carved Sitton Duck and Wine, Dinner and Stay at Hotel Fredonia.
