Press Release NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University continues to honor the life and legacy of the late Bob Sitton ’60 with The Bob Sitton Memorial Golf Tournament. Sitton, the longtime director of the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association, passed away July 8, 2025 after a lifetime of service to SFA and its alumni. From 1972 to 1998, his leadership helped endow hundreds of scholarships that generated millions of dollars in support for students. His impact continues to be felt across campus and throughout the Lumberjack community. Formerly known as the Annual SFA Alumni Homecoming Golf Tournament, the event was established in 1973 and later renamed the Bob Sitton Classic. Played each year at Woodland Hills Golf Club, the tournament now bears its memorial name in recognition of Sitton’s enduring legacy and deep love for SFA and the game of golf. “Bob’s contributions to SFA are immeasurable,” said Craig Turnage ’00 and ’05, executive director of the SFA Alumni Association. “Renaming this tournament as a memorial is a meaningful way to continue to honor his years of service and the lasting impact he had on this university.” A Cushing native, Sitton grew up on a farm without electricity or running water and balanced college life with responsibilities back home, often returning to milk cows. After earning his degree in health and physical education, he coached high school football at Cushing High School, C.E. King High School in Houston, and Klein High School in Spring before beginning his transformative career at SFA. Even after retiring, Sitton remained a fixture on campus, first as a part-time employee and later as a frequent visitor who stayed closely connected to the university he loved. In 2015, he was inducted into the SFA Alumni Hall of Fame after being nominated by at least seven individuals. He was also the inaugural recipient of the SFA Lifetime Achievement Award, among numerous other honors. In 2021, the Bob Sitton Head Men’s Basketball Coach Office at William R. Johnson Coliseum was named in his honor, following approval by the Board of Regents at the request of Ron Kesterson ’76, a former member of the Alumni Association and Alumni Foundation boards. The Bob Sitton Memorial Golf Tournament stands as a lasting tribute to a man whose dedication, humility and passion for Stephen F. Austin State University touched countless lives and will continue to inspire future generations of Lumberjacks.
