A scholarship honoring Jim and Cindy Harvey has been established by Altek Systems of Houston through the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association.

The Jim and Cindy Harvey Economics Scholarship will benefit students who major in economics. Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade-point average,  and the scholarship is renewable to its current recipient.

Jim Harvey ’71 completed a double major in economics and sociology while at SFA. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and spent two years as a representative in the SFA Student Congress. After graduation he worked for Xerox and Zytron, and by 1978 he began his own business, Altek Systems, a micrographics and digital scanner provider. Harvey received  a Master of Information Technology certification in 1990. For ten years until 2007, he served as the chairman of the Larkin Community Center, a low-income area assistance and day care center in Houston.

Harvey just finished his fifth Houston Marathon in January. This year he got his first opportunity to coach, which helped many first-time marathoners accomplish their lifelong dreams.

Cindy Sypert Harvey graduated in 1973 with an early childhood education degree. She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She is a Houston chapter alumna. After graduation Harvey went to work as a customer service representative and secretary for Texas Commerce Bank. She then later joined Arthur Andersen as an administrative assistant. She took a 21-year hiatus to raise the family’s two children, Ryan and Kristin, and volunteered as a PTA president, food pantry worker through the National Charity League , and with church mission trips. She was a member of the Houston Junior Forum doing service work at its Community Preschool of Houston. With the children now grown, she recently joined the work force again doing part time clerical work for a tax accounting firm.
